The BMW Isetta is today a highly sought-after classic car.
The microcar from Munich had combined an intelligent concept with the elegance of simplicity, representing a truly futuristic car for its time.
Because of its egg shape and bubble-like windows, it became known as a bubble car, a name also given to other similar vehicles.
Initially manufactured by the Italian firm Iso SpA, the name Isetta is the Italian diminutive form of Iso, meaning 'little Iso'.
BMW decided to deviate from its Italian ancestor:
the original had only three, while the German version left the factory with four wheels.
With 10,000 examples sold in the first year alone, Isetta initially won the hearts of Germans, and then spread like wildfire to other countries and in eight years a total of 161,728 units were sold.
To this day, it is one of the best-selling single-cylinder cars in the world.
In 1962 the era of small bubble cars came to an end.
Widespread prosperity was growing and the market had begun to demand more valuable cars.
Our BMW Isetta is the 250 model and is finished in the classy shade of Cortina Grau.
She was purchased in Italy.
We have had some Isetta's in the past and we love having them around because they offer a unique driving experience and look adorable.
This example is an older restoration and still showing a very nice quality.
She was repainted in her original colour and still presents well with a healthy body.
Inside you will find an interior that not only looks period correct but also smells like it.
And that is not a bad thing, on the contrary.
Her seat has been recovered during her restoration in a plaid cloth, which looks amazing.
As for the other interior details, we believe that they are mostly original.
Which we love to see, as it can only be original once.
Driving her is the best part.
With only 12 bhp you can't expect to win any drag races, but that is not the point.
She is a great car to drive around town and the countryside on a lovely summer's day with your partner.
With her unique driving position and lively 1 cylinder engine, she will put a smile on your face at every occasion.
Mechanically she is ready for many more fun miles as this was taken care of during her restoration.
Her engine runs great and her gearbox is a smooth shifting example.
Her brakes were overhauled by the previous owner, meaning that you won't have to worry about stopping.
We have given her our seal of approval after changing the points, fuel tap, spark plug and windscreen wiper meaning this Isetta is ready for her next chapter with a new owner!.
